The Strategic Discussion Club: “The Role of Ukraine in Resolving Protracted Conflicts”

The Institute of World Policy held the 4th meeting of the Strategic Discussion Club.

Andrii Deschytsia, Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office for conflicts; Borys Tarasiuk, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (1998 – 2000; 2005 – 2007), Member of the Parliament of Ukraine; Matthew Rojansky, Deputy director of the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, United States of America; Vladimir Socor, Senior Fellow, Jamestown Foundation, Washington.

Mr. Deschytsia mentioned that resolving conflicts is a priority during his chairmanship of Ukraine at OSCE. The Special Representative informed the Strategic Discussion Club that he “actually meets the representatives of the conflicting parties every week.”

Mr. Deschytsia evaluated the reconciliation of negotiations and emphasized that conflicting parties can come to agreement. This possibility can be exemplified by the protocol resolution, which was signed in the “5+2” format on May 24th, on the dismantlement of the ropeway over the river Dnister.

The ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Borys Tarasiuk, stressed the role of Moscow in resolving protracted conflicts on the post-Soviet space, remarking that “there is no sense in expectation of resolving protracted conflicts without the will of Russia”.

The Strategic Discussion Club aims to create opportunities for meaningful regular public discussions on strategic issues of national security of Ukraine in an informal setting.

The event was held with the support of the NATO Liaison Office in Ukraine and the Embassy of Norway in Ukraine.
